File Size

Its amazing how big the file gets once you start adding graphics. I remember not so long ago, the SWF was just over 200k.  Adding 11 levels has bloated it to 800k, and there’s plenty more levels yet to be added.

I’ve got a feeling once the cutscenes have been added along with the soundtrack, the swf filesize is gonna catapult to around 40Mb - 50Mb! I’ve already created an interesting preloader for it which should keep the player mildy amused/occupied while the game loads.  Other than that, it will all depend on how good the player’s internet connection is.  I think its not such a huge issue in this day and age. If it was 10 years ago, then there might have been a problem. But I think a 50mb game shouldn’t take too long to load given the average user’s broadband connection, and the speed of most web servers nowadays.

As always, time will tell.

I don’t agree when you say that a 50 mb game is not a problem today. It’s not a problem when you live in a 1st world country. Here in Brazil the situation is totally different. If you pack all the game in a single and huge swf, then no Brazilian will be able to load it. My connection is a good one by our standards, and it downloads at 10-20 kbps. It would take more than an hour to load…

My suggestion is that you load the levels at demand. Look at a game called Dirk Valentine - it does exactly what I’m saying. If you chose to do this, then please add save support - it would greatly helps:)

  2. Anything over 15MB is going to be an issue, trust me. I just today played your game for the first time, I was amazed at it, especially the story telling. I was hoping you would do a sequel, and hoping even more you would get a programmer to do the coding side for you since the first game has lagging issues, possibly do to memory leaking. You can definitely compress your audio to keep the file size low, even without reducing the sound quality. You did amazing work with the first game, I really hope to see you correct the few faults it had. Are you familiar with flashgamelicene.com? If not, check it out, this game can earn you thousands, easily $6,000, I’ve been sponsored myself and have been following the flash industry for years now. Contact me if you have any questions regarding anything, if not, see you around FGL hopefully, Awesome work, don’t be afraid to reach out for a little bit of help if/where needed.
